Diagnosis
JAYSON:
I remember when the doctor gave me the diagnosis…and by the time I got home, it had really kind of sunk in that okay, this is, you know, life-changing.
JAYSON and ONSCREEN TEXT:
Jayson:
My initial pill regimen for several years was one pill, once a day, usually at night.
Text Onscreen:
Jayson is living with HIV and taking CABENUVA at the time of filming.
JAYSON:
And that went on for a long, long time. And sometimes that pill is a big reminder of being HIV positive and this virus in your body.

Learning about CABENUVA
JAYSON:
I’ve been on CABENUVA, and in my opinion, it’s been fantastic. It’s really nice not to have to rush home and take a pill. To not have to take pills anymore. That was huge. Once I knew there was something that you had a choice, I was like “sign me up.” For me, a quick change in plans on CABENUVA doesn’t mean anything. I don’t have to worry about it. I can continue on with what I was doing and adjust, and adapt, and take advantage of new opportunities that might come up because you missed the ferry, or you missed the plane, or whatever. And it is very flexible. For me, to feel that spontaneity on Saturday, or really any other day, it really is freedom. I don't have to think about what I'm gonna be doing later or do I have to be home. I can go out for dinner. I can meet friends out at the park, whatever it is. I don’t have to think about it at all because it’s Saturday. It’s not injection day.
JAYSON and ONSCREEN TEXT:
Jayson:
CABENUVA is two injections given by my healthcare provider every other month.
Text Onscreen:
Your doctor may have you take about a month of once-daily starter pills before beginning injections. Your every-other-month regimen begins after 2 months of injections.
JAYSON:
And so, it’s six times a year you go to the doctor. And it helps keep me undetectable.
JAYSON and ONSCREEN TEXT:
Jayson:
And so I know every eight weeks on a Tuesday, I’m gonna have my appointment. The appointment’s already set. I’m a planner. So, I plan it out and I know what I’m doing. It’s important to hit your target date, but if you can’t hit that date, you can hit it a week before to a week after.
Text Onscreen:
To help stay undetectable, it’s important to keep your planned appointments and stick with your treatment plan.
JAYSON:
So, it works out very well.
JAYSON and ONSCREEN TEXT:
Jayson:
And then, the injection itself really doesn’t take that long. It’s a relatively quick visit.
Text Onscreen:
Individual results may vary.
JAYSON:
It’s an office visit. It’s a chance – for me, I like the connection with the doctor, my doctor, and the medical staff. They get a chance to see you more with this, with this regimen. And so, like, “How are you feeling?” You know, “Is everything okay? What’s going on in your life?”
ONSCREEN TEXT:
Jayson on living life
JAYSON:
This is 20 years for me in August since I was diagnosed. And I’m gonna live to be an old man, probably, you know, hopefully. And so, it’s really, uhm, meaningful to me to leave a legacy for people who are HIV positive.

ORLANDO:
I remember after being diagnosed and watching the sunset, and that sun never rose. Every day it was the same moment of, “You have HIV.” I was 27 and here I am trying to figure out what it even meant to be gay.

Orlando:
I was told to take this pill every single day at the same time and if I didn’t my body may build a resistance.

Resistance means that the HIV has adapted and some HIV medicines may no longer work.
ORLANDO:
If I’m out with my friends, working, or want to pick up an extra shift and I lose track of time, “Did you take your pill?” It was an everyday, constant reminder. Not just that I’m taking a pill, but, “Dude, you have HIV! This is your life for the rest of your life!”

I have a personality that announces itself. You know, I can hang out with my friends. I am genuinely free to just be who I am. I can focus on work. I was 36 years old. I was probably in the best shape of my life at that time. I had a diagnosis that wasn’t going to be a death sentence for me. Knowing that HIV could be treated with medicine, I knew I’d survive this. And over the next 13 years I was prescribed a cocktail of 3 drugs. I would fill the pill dispenser Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I’d fill it for the week. It became a logistical nightmare. I was content to make it my problem for the rest of my life. I was really grateful for it, but I was just tired of taking a pill every day.

Now that I’m on CABENUVA, it’s refreshing to be on long-acting therapy. So, there was a transition for me. There was 1 month where I did the oral medications, and we were testing my reactions.

Your doctor may have you take about a month of once-daily starter pills before beginning injections. Stay under the care of your doctor during treatment.

So, at the 30-day mark, I had my first injection.

Mark:
It was sore, I’ll admit, but the next day I’m not taking a pill. And now I get one injection of...

There is a target treatment date for the injections, but the next thing is there is a flexible week on either side.

To help stay undetectable, it’s important to keep your planned appointments and stick with your treatment plan.

So, if something happens at the doctor’s office or if I can’t get there because of work or anything, I do have that flexible time.

I’ve been told I’m an optimist. I have learned that “yes” is a very powerful word and to say “yes” to a lot of opportunities. To do the things that I want to do and be outside and ride my bike with my friends. Just being able to laugh with friends is one of the best things, yeah.

This is 20 years for me in August since I was diagnosed. And I’m gonna live to be an old man, probably, you know, hopefully. And so, it’s really, uhm, meaningful to me to leave a legacy for people who are HIV positive.

Diagnosis
ORLANDO:
I remember after being diagnosed and watching the sunset, and that sun never rose. Every day it was the same moment of, “You have HIV.” I was 27 and here I am trying to figure out what it even meant to be gay.
ORLANDO and ONSCREEN TEXT:
Orlando:
I was told to take this pill every single day at the same time and if I didn’t my body may build a resistance.
Text Onscreen:
Resistance means that the HIV has adapted and some HIV medicines may no longer work.
ORLANDO:
If I’m out with my friends, working, or want to pick up an extra shift and I lose track of time, “Did you take your pill?” It was an everyday, constant reminder. Not just that I’m taking a pill, but, “Dude, you have HIV! This is your life for the rest of your life!”

STEVE:
When I was on the daily pills, I was not out about my HIV status. So, anytime I would go to visit family or friends, there’s also this fear too. Is someone going to see my pills? Am I going to leave my pill bottle out? I did travel internationally for work a lot at that time, and so constantly this fear of, did I pack everything? Am I going to get pulled aside in customs? Are they going to start asking questions about what these pills are? Until I got on to CABENUVA, and the long-acting injections I didn’t really fully appreciate the toll that it was having that daily reminder and the fear around my pills being discovered.
That’s one of the benefits that I found in my experience with using CABENUVA is the ability to get the two injections and not have to worry about did I forget my pill bottles? Am I going to be able to get my refills?
